It can seem like the Covid news is always bad, but there are plenty of positive signs that Oregon is moving out of the lockdown that’s kept our events roundups slim for the past year. Hospitalizations and deaths are down, and the spike in cases over the past few weeks appears to have moved in the right direction. Even still, as Oregonians figure out how best to gather safely and what restrictions will remain in place over the coming weeks, activities are still pretty slim.
We’ve got just a few events for you this weekend -- some familiar and one that we’ve never highlighted before. All of them are outdoors or entirely virtual, meaning they provide safe spaces to enjoy some art this weekend. It’s the second week of Milwaukie’s Porchfest, there’s an annual music festival and activity day in beautiful Central Oregon, and we’ve got a virtual art showcase from a premier Pacific Northwest painter.
Check out these great local events below and be sure to SHARE this roundup with the art-lovers in your life. If you’ve got an upcoming event in Oregon you’d like us to highlight in the future, sign up to become a member on www.curbsidepress.org so you can leave us the details in the comments below (you do NOT need to purchase a subscription to become a member).
Have a safe and fun weekend, Curbsiders.
Milwaukie Porchfest - Free
Friday May 7 - 6 pm to 8 pm
Milwaukie’s new and annual Porchfest celebration takes place the first three weeks in May. Every Friday offers new and unique musical acts, playing from their own homes or from participating neighborhood porches and lawns. From well-known covers to old cultural songs and even other kinds of art that people in attendance bring along with them, the whole thing is sure to be a wonderfully creative and pleasant time.
Maupin Daze: Lindy Gravelle Live - Free
Saturday, May 15 - noon to 3 pm
Kaiser City Park - Maupin, OR
We rarely get to track down events in tiny Central Oregon communities like Maupin, but this one is definitely a hidden gem. The annual Maupin Daze event is held at Kaiser City Park and always features live music and goodies for kids. This weekend’s performance features Oregon-bred country musician Lindy Gravelle. If you feel like stopping over in Wasco County this Saturday for some outdoor fun, this is worth your while.
The Reckless Rockhounds at Oregon Crafters Market
Sunday, May 9 - 1 pm to 3 pm
The Oregon Crafters Market has been going on for years in scenic Silverton, where local artisans show off their hand-crafted goods and people from all over the Willamette Valley come to support small businesses. There’s also live music, with this weekend’s artists including the classic blues rockers The Reckless Rockhounds. Buy some knick-knacks or come for the food and tunes, either way, this is a good chance to support small businesses hurt by Covid-19
Virtual Art Show: Jennifer Lommers
Pacific Northwest painter and digital artist Jennifer Lommers is premiering new art through an all-virtual release show throughout the month of May. She will utilize platforms like Instagram, her own website and virtual exhibits at art galleries around Oregon and Washington in order to debut her work. It’s a really cool and innovative way to engage with art during a time when indoor art shows are limited, so be sure to check out Lommers’ bright colors and abstract form.
